Care Guide

Diamond care

Diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring substance on Earth, but still require close attention and stringent care to maintain its enduring brilliance.

How to clean diamonds:

1. Soak in warm water with a degreasing solution (washing-up liquid will suffice). Avoid using bleaches or other hard abrasives.

2. Gently brush with a soft, clean toothbrush before drying with a lint-free cloth. Be careful with the stone’s setting as it may be fragile.

Organic gem care

Organic gems like pearls and opal possess different chemical compositions to mineral gemstones like diamonds and are much softer. They are also markedly vulnerable to acids and many chemicals found in cleaning products.

How to clean organic gems:

1. Do not submerge gemstones in water or clean with steam, boiling or ultrasonic tools. Instead, use a soft, damp cloth to gently rub each stone individually. Avoid pulling the stones through the cloth as this is liable to stretch or damage the string. If stubborn dirt remains on some of the gemstones, a soft brush should carefully help remove the grime.

2. Dry the gemstones with a lint-free cloth. A hard blow with the breath or daubing with the cloth should remove excess moisture built-up in drill holes and knots. Do not use a hairdryer to remove moisture.

Gold care

Fingerprints and a daily build-up of dirt can lead to gold jewellery slowly losing its shine. Luckily, it’s easy to bring back the sparkle of even the dullest gold.

How to clean gold:

1. Add a few drops of a mild degreasing solution such as washing-up liquid to a lukewarm bowl of water.

2. Soak the jewellery for ten minutes to loosen any build-up of dirt.

3. Gently clean with a soft-bristled brush such as an childs toothbrush. Be careful when cleaning fragile parts of the piece like the stone’s setting.

4. Rinse thoroughly in clean water to remove soap residue and any other remnants of dirt.

5. Dry gently with a lint-free cloth or leave on a cloth to air dry.

Silver care

Tarnishing occurs when silver is exposed to oxygen and sulphur in the air and can result in dull or even black jewellery. It is unavoidable, but, thankfully, it doesn't damage the metal and can be removed easily with cleaning.

How to clean silver:

1. Soak the silver jewellery for ten minutes in a bowl of warm water with a few drops of washing-up liquid.

2. Gently scrub the silver with a soft, clean brush.

3. Rinse in clean, warm water and leave to air dry.

For more stubborn tarnishing:

1. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a bowl.

2. Soak a clean toothbrush in the solution and gently brush the affected areas of silver. Rise and leave to air dry.
