Diamond Guide

No two diamonds are exactly alike. As organic minerals, they are known as the hardest naturally occurring substance and are effortlessly synonymous with durability, quality and irresistible beauty.

At CraftedJewellery, we believe diamonds are more than a gem. They are an embodiment of the most significant sentiments and represent passion in a way unwavered by time.

Whether you decide to choose a natural or a lab diamond...

This guide is designed to show you different diamond shapes and break down the gemstone into four universally agreed attributes: carat, cut, clarity and colour, also known as the 4 C’s.

Carat
Carat measures a diamond's weight and size. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can appear different due to shape and cut. "Ct" is the abbreviated unit for carat, equal to 0.20g for diamonds and other gemstones.

Cut

The cut refers to the quality and precision of a diamond’s workmanship. This is defined by the gem’s shape, proportions, symmetry and polish. Even and precise cuts allow each facet to interact with light in a stunning way, with highly graded cuts offering the most sparkle and luminosity. A Very Good or Excellent cut is vital for a diamond's brilliance and sparkle and is often overlooked.

At Crafted Jewellery, we only work with very good or excellent cut round diamonds and ensure every gem is in the highest tier of proportion, symmetry, polish and sparkle.

Diamond

Clarity

As diamonds are formed naturally, they are all influenced by
organically occurring aspects known as ‘inclusions’ to some degree. This is generally presented in the form of foreign materials such as carbon that are trapped inside the gem during formation, or fractures and imperfections on its surface. These are taken into account when defining a diamond’s clarity and calculating its value.

We only source diamonds graded SI1 and above, that is, from slightly included to flawless. For the most brilliant stone, we recommend a diamond with minimal inclusions to ensure the most stunning sparkle.

Diamond
Colour
Not to be confused with the reflection of spectral colours that are emitted as a diamond moves, colour takes into account the natural body colour of the mineral. Many diamonds exhibit hues of yellow, brown and grey, which is why colourless gems are the most desirable and valuable. Colour quality is dictated by an alphabetical range from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow).
